There’s a saying that goes, Tell me who your friends are, and I’ll show you who you are.
“I am proud to say the company I keep as a leader of the LAX Coastal Chamber is exemplary,” says Chamber President/CEO, Christina Davis.
On July 19, the exemplary leadership of the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce headed to Tony P’s Dockside Grill in Marina del Rey for their first official board meeting of the year. Part board meeting, part board retreat, that evening was the beginning of a long journey for our 2018-2019 Board of Directors. As they discussed Chamber minutes, policies, and tactics, they were introduced to the inner-workings of one of the strongest voices of business for the LAX Coastal region, but they also met some of the most influential leaders from within our community—the outstanding men and women who had volunteered to serve on our board.
While only a temporary position, serving on the Chamber’s board is a career-building experience. With representatives from large corporations like Kaiser Permanente down to individually-owned businesses like Golding & Lamothe, our board of directors is a diverse—yet inclusive—entity that helps provide a variety of viewpoints into the business climate of Los Angeles. Each board member is a dedicated community steward, looking to enhance our region and strengthen our sense of business by supporting the LAX Coastal Chamber through their time and their talents. Throughout their 3-year term they work tirelessly with both staff and members, because they understand that it is only through working together that we can truly succeed.
As the evening came to a close during the retreat, discussion traveled around the table allowing each member of the board to introduce themselves to the room of 35 individuals. When Christina first joined the chamber, she said she was “struck by the Chamber’s strong sense of community and was constantly impressed by the talent displayed within the organization.” As each member took the time to describe the reasons behind their service to the Chamber, we were impressed once again.

I’ve been a member of the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce for about 7 years. I originally joined because I wanted to get business and I’m not from this area, but I met so many great people and I quickly realized this is a great organization to get involved in. You learn about the workings of the community and I’ve built a lot of great relationships, which is why I keep coming back. Now, my office relocated outside of the area and I moved down to Long Beach, but for some reason I just can’t leave this Chamber. I guess I love it here.

Tony P’s Dockside Grill has been a member of this community for 22 years, and we’ve been a member of the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce for just as long. A lot of people are going to say a lot of things about the Chamber, but one thing I’ve always said is don’t join if you aren’t going to get involved. You should get involved in the committees and come to the different events, because that’s when you’re going to feel part of this community. We had a restaurant in Santa Monica for 16 years and I was on the board of the Santa Monica Chamber as well. The difference is that nobody can really afford to live in Santa Monica so you’d go to all of these business events and then everybody would get in their car and go home. Here, you’re going to meet people in the grocery store, the gas station, at the movies, and I’ve said this time and time again that it makes a huge difference; a huge difference because you’re going to see the people from the Chamber throughout your day. You’re always going to be building relationships.

I’ve been with Marriott for over 18 years and this is my second go-around with the Chamber. I used to be the manager of the Courtyard El Segundo, and when I was in El Segundo I really loved the Chamber there, but I also joined the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce. I’ve been involved with many Chambers over the years, but this is the one. They do great work in other cities, but the LAX Coastal Chamber really is fantastic.
